Medical and Sports Sciences from Burlington Technical Center is a Campus Certificate Medicine degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The Medical and Sports Sciences Program is a two-year college preparatory program that meets for just over two hours per day, five days per week. The rigorous curriculum prepares students to pursue further education towards a career in the medical sciences. Medical and Sports Sciences I The first year of the program focuses on gaining a thorough understanding of the human body systems (i.e. anatomy and physiology), related medical terminology, associated diseases (pathology) and treatment approaches. Students will participate in laboratory experiences including microscopic analysis, dissection, orientation to medical instruments (i.e. blood pressure cuffs, reflex hammers,…) The Medical and Sports Sciences program has developed an articulation agreement with Vermont Technical College (VTC), providing students with the opportunity to earn up to 8 college credits for Anatomy and Physiology. Students also spend time during this year exploring various medical and sports related fields in order to fully understand the details of each of these positions. During the spring semester, the students observe different medical professionals and identify their own area of interest. Prerequisite: Biology or Instructor Approval Medical and Sports Sciences II The second year of the program begins with a Human Growth and Development unit. This unit is also covered under our VTC articulation agreement, allowing students the opportunity to earn an additional 3 college credits. Students also explore personal values, medical ethics and legal issues related to medicine. Students will be introduced to medical documentation and time will be spent on college preparation and job skills. Students will be divided into smaller groups during this second year and will spend some time exploring exciting topics in laboratory science such as phlebotomy (blood drawing), hematology (the study of blood), microbiology (the study of bacteria and viruses), bioterrorism and forensic science. Students will also spend time exploring exciting topics in physical science, such as modalities (i.e. heat, ice, electrical stimulation,…), kinesiology (i.e. assessment of the joints of the body), therapeutic exercise (i.e. stretching, strengthening and conditioning) and wellness/prevention. Students are placed in career work experiences in their identified area of interest allowing them to acquire valuable hands on experience with patients as well as interaction with medical/sports professionals Further Educational Opportunities Qualified students may earn up to fourteen transcripted college credits through a dual enrollment program at Vermont Technical College and articulation agreements with Community College of Vermont. Previous students have successfully transferred these credits to highly esteemed colleges and universities.
