Medical Assistants perform a variety of clinical and administrative duties, including: * Updating and filing medical records; * Arranging hospital admission and laboratory services; * Billing and bookkeeping; * Taking and recording vital signs and medical histories; * Educating patients; * Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens; * Performing basic laboratory procedures; * Preparing and administering medications; * Performing EKGs. Medical Assistants may also arrange examining room instruments and equipment, purchase and maintain supplies and equipment and keep waiting and examining rooms neat and clean. Medical Assistants are employed by practicing physicians more than any other type of allied health personnel. Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2012 as the health services industry expands. Due to the preference of many physicians for trained personnel, job prospects should be excellent for medical assistants with formal training or experience, particularly those with formal certification. As one of the fastest growing allied health care careers, medical assisting offers many opportunities for advancement. CMA's can advance to office manager, clinical supervisor and qualify for a variety of administrative support occupations. 39 semester hours are required to earn a Diploma in the Medical Assistant program.
