Working in the facilities of the University's Ahmanson Science Center, students enjoy hands-on use of the key instruments and techniques commonly employed in molecular laboratories. They also gain extensive experience in the use of recombinant DNA techniques such as PCR and DNA sequencing to study gene structure and function. During the first two years, students focus on basic concepts and theories; their junior- and senior-year courses apply these concepts and principles to the broader study of biotechnology. Students are encouraged to conduct original research with faculty advisers and to present their findings at undergraduate research conferences. The program's top students are encouraged to apply for summer research work. These same students have garnered recognition of the excellence of their education including California Heart Association grants, National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation summer research posts, and internships at biotechnology firms, such as Amgen and Baxter - among the nation's top biopharmaceutical corporations.
