Students specialize in the area: Social Services Graduates who have successfully completed the Social Services Option are eligible to apply for registration as a Social Work Assistant (SWA) through the Ohio Counselor and Social Worker Board. ?A social worker assistant, under ? direct supervision ? may provide human, social and community services that include intake assessment and referral, screening, crisis intervention and resolution, community support, case management and outreach, record keeping, social assessment, visual observation of an individual in the individual's environment, assistance in facilitation with groups and families, advocacy and orientation, education, and prevention services.? Learning Outcomes At the completion of the plan of study the student will be able to: Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the role of the human services worker in a variety of social service settings. Examine current social issues and their impact on society, including substance abuse and dependence. Compare and contrast current counseling theories used in the field of human services. Demonstrate facilitative skills in group settings that apply family and group dynamics theories. Apply appropriate interpersonal skills in helping relationships, including crisis intervention. Assess a client's needs holistically and develop individual plans for personal growth and change as appropriate. Employ sensitivity and awareness when working with persons from diverse populations. Apply case management skills, including documentation and recordkeeping skills, and the ability to make appropriate referrals. Demonstrate professional and ethical integrity.
