Radiation therapy is the use of radiation (x-rays, gamma rays, electron beams, etc.) in the treatment of human diseases, especially cancer. Radiation therapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy. Career Opportunities With experience, the career of a radiation therapist may go in various directions. Locations: Administration, dosimetry, education, research. Settings: Hospital, clinic, private office, industrial laboratories, veterinary medicine, research, commercial sales. Radiation therapists are usually employed on a full-time basis usually work a 40-hour week. Salary and benefits vary with experience and employment location, but are generally competitive with other allied health specialties. Employment opportunities are available throughout the country, buy may vary geographically. Program Description The Radiation Therapy Technology certificate is a 12 month program of specialty education for registered radiographers and prepares them to take the ARRT certification examination in radiation therapy technology. Classes are conducted every other week on Thursday and Friday with clinical experience obtained at affiliated clinical sites throughout the Southeast. A minimum grade of 75% is required in each course. Full-time status is required for those who have no previous work experience in radiation therapy. Applicants who have worked as radiation therapy technologists for a minimum of two (2) years may qualify for the advanced standing program. Contact the Nursing/Allied Health Division Office for further details. A class is accepted each Spring and begins in the Fall semester of each year.
