Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Associate from Chippewa Valley Technical College is a Campus Associate Counseling degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) program offers students opportunities to practice and achieve competence in the foundations of substance use disorder counseling needed for employment in the AODA profession. Preparation for this growing profession requires personal and interpersonal qualities including conduct that does not compromise the fulfillment of professional responsibilities. Accordingly, all students will be asked to complete a Substance Use Status form. Essential qualities of AODA students include emotional stability and maturity, self-awareness and self-discipline, an interest in working with people, an appreciation of cultural diversity, a strong commitment to a healthy lifestyle that includes low-risk choices regarding substance use, the ability to accept personal responsibility, and strong reading, writing, and abstract thinking skills. Successful students will learn to: assess the physical, emotional, and social effects of substance abuse by clients. provide effective counseling services for diverse clients. demonstrate ethical and legal responsibility in personal and professional behavior and practice. develop and document treatment plans for clients based on clinical evaluations. facilitate AODA education and therapy groups. assess and respond to family systems and dynamics. communicate information about clients in clinical reports and records. The program provides instructional support towards meeting the licensure requirements for substance abuse counselors. Persons accepted for enrollment in the AODA program must abide by the substance abuse counselor code book, Chapters RL 164 and 165, established by the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing. Violation of the code will result in dismissal from the program.
