Catholic Studies from Christian Brothers University is a Campus Master Religious Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Catholicism is a rich and diverse religious tradition. The goal of the Master of Arts in Catholic Studies program at Christian Brothers University is to broaden and deepen our understanding of this tradition through study of Catholic theology and the interdisciplinary study of Catholicism's influence in the world. The program offers systematic and critical exploration of the diverse ways in which the Catholic tradition informs theology, culture, institutions, and identity. Catholic Studies at Christian Brothers University will help you to develop an intellectual and academic approach to Catholicism which does justice to the richness and profound truth of Catholicism as a Christian religious tradition. The truth of the Catholic faith is grounded in the revealed Word of God expressed in the Sacred Scriptures, especially the teaching of the Gospel, and Church doctrine communicated from the Magisterium. From the very beginning in the Apostolic Fathers, the Catholic tradition has affirmed that all human beings by nature desire to know and to love, and that those desires are ultimately fulfilled only in union with God. Our created nature seeks fulfillment in our Creator. Grace perfects nature; faith and reason are complementary. John Paul II stated in Fides et Ratio, ?Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of the truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth - in a word, to know Himself - so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.? Catholic Studies at Christian Brothers University affirms that through the exercise of the intellect students may deepen their knowledge and love of God, seek the well-being of humankind, and provide well reasoned motives for the practice of Christian discipleship. Our study begins with an overview of Catholicism's influence in the world, particularly how a Catholic worldview has informed theological reflection, artistic expression, and institutional formation. From there we proceed through Catholic approaches to biblical study, spirituality, understandings of human nature, Christ's nature and role in salvation, worship, the moral life, relations to other faith traditions, and the structure and mission of the Church in the world. Catholic Studies at Christian Brothers University will prepare students for diverse ministries, such as primary and secondary school religion teaching, religious education in parish settings, pastoral leadership, and social service.
