Elementary/Special Education from City University of Seattle is a Campus Certificate Special Education degree that prepares you for a Education career. The Alternative Route to Dual Endorsement is part of City University of Seattle's regionally accredited Teacher Certification program, and is designed for Para-educators (and others*) with interest in teaching in special education or ELL. Note: The Professional Educator Standards Board of the State of Washington provides an $8000 per year (forgivable loan) toward tuition for candidates who desire to teach in a shortage area. Depending on the route* selected you will earn your WA teaching certificate , endorsements and or degree. (*See below for full details.) To qualify for an Alternative Route, a candidate must submit a signed Letter of Understanding and Support from their district, pass all sections of the WEST-B prior to July, 2008, complete a City University application and interview, and meet the criteria of one of the following: Route 1: Para currently employed in a public school with 3+ years of experience; Transferable AA Route 2: Para currently employed in a public school with 3+ years of experience; BA or higher from a regionally accredited college Route 3: "Career changer" with 5+ years of experience in the field of special ed.; Not employed by a school district; BA or higher in the field of special education Route 4: Teacher in a public school on a Conditional or Emergency Certification The program is currently offered in King, Snohomish and Skagit Counties. Candidates will demonstrate competencies required for endorsements in both Elementary Education (K-8) plus Special Education (P-12) or ELL. During year one of program, candidates work with a cohort to learn and demonstrate the knowledge areas of both endorsements. In year two each candidate, with the support of an internship team in their building, designs and manages their professional development plan, demonstrating the skills and competencies through performance tasks while steadily taking on greater responsibilities of the classroom teacher. Upon successful competition of this program (and any state required tests), you will be prepared to teach students with special needs or who have primary language other than English in either an elementary classroom or a P-12 pullout or dedicated services model.
