Religious Education from Claremont School of Theology is a Campus Master Religious Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Master of Arts curriculum combines training in academic content and methods, in the research skills appropriate to the study of religion and the various theological disciplines, and in the knowledge and sensitivity necessary for teachers and ministers to engage in dialogue across cultures and religions in the classroom and in congregations. All graduates are expected to acquire both breadth and depth of preparation in relation to their overall degree objectives. Breadth is established by taking a wide range of survey courses in the theological disciplines or by combining selected survey courses in the Christian theological disciplines with survey courses in other traditions or other academic disciplines. Master of Arts in Religious Education (M.A.R.E.) The program is intended to prepare students to function as competent educators within settings where religious and moral growth are primary concerns. Educational planning, organizational design, communication and human development skills are emphasized. The program educates students for a wide variety of professional opportunities in Religious Education and for certification as religious educators by denominations. The M.A.R.E. consists of 54 units of course work and 6 units of practicum for a total of 60 units. Students are required to write a research paper or project at the culmination of the program and pass an oral exam on the paper or project as it relates to the program of study. Students in the M.A.R.E. meet requirements for breadth of study through course work in three broad areas: Religious Education (21 units); the Biblical, Historical, and Systematic Disciplines (21 units); and Electives (18 units). (Note: Students who have previously completed an M.Div. or its equivalent and been admitted to the 30 unit program should work out breadth of study requirements with their advisor.) Further details on requirements specific to the M.A.R.E. are offered as follows: Religious Education - 21 Units Courses in Psychology of Religion may be counted toward the 21 units in Religious Education. At least 6 of the 21 units must be field-based or contextual education courses, or an internship. Biblical, Historical, and Systematic Disciplines - 21 Units Introductory courses in these areas include Basic Aspects of First Testament (FT307), Basic Aspects of New Testament (NT303), History of Christianity (HC301 and HC302), Backgrounds of Contemporary Theology (TH302), Major Christian Doctrines (TH301), and Basic Christian Ethics (EC301). Electives - 18 Units Electives include courses in special area of concentration or religious education specialties (e.g., preschool education, religious communications, church music, church program director, and curriculum development).
