The program is also designed to increase students' knowledge of dramatic literature, which is the basis for making artistic decisions in areas such as design, costuming and performance. The excellence of Clarke's theater program is evidenced by its award-winning record in the American College Theatre Festival competition. Clarke boasts six regional awards in the last nine seasons, including the Award for Theatre Program Development and Leadership from the Kennedy Center. The department is dedicated to providing the highest-quality artistic training for its undergraduate students through its intensive studio classroom program, its course offerings and its main stage productions. The department aims to develop in its students an aesthetic sense, analytic and critical-thinking skills, communication ability, physical and affective skills, self-perception and self-presentation skills. Further, the department strives to provide both classroom and production experience for every student at Clarke College to develop their artistic literacy and aesthetic sensitivity. Because theater production is an extension of classroom teaching, drama/speech majors are required to work in some capacity on every production. The department presents four plays a year and varies the productions to insure that students learn to deal with a variety of styles and genres.
