To maintain qualification for study towards Master's degree , the student must, no later than the end of the second semester of study, select a general research-interest topic and find a research advisor. This requirement applies to both thesis-option and non-thesis-option students. Note that the University regulations require all Master's degree students to take at least 6 thesis credits (PH699 for Physics). Thesis option: Master's degree involves an oral presentation and a defense of the written Master's thesis before a special committee of at least 3 faculty members, appointed by the student's advisor. Thesis-option students are required to take, and obtain a grade of at least B in, at least one of the courses PH661, PH663 or PH669. Non-thesis option: Master's degree students are required to take all 3 courses PH661, PH663, PH669, and obtain a grade of at least B in each of them. Out of the total 30 credit hours for Master's degree , the specific Physics requirements for graduation are: A minimum of 19 credit hours taken in Physics (course work, seminars, and thesis credits). These must include at least 1 credit hour of PH683 or PH684 (Graduate Seminar), as well as the required course(s) from the PH661, PH663 and PH669 sequence, as described above.
