Coastal art graduates are self-employed as artists and designers, work for established design firms and corporations, or run their own advertising and design businesses. Others have become educators, teaching at the university, high school and grade school levels. The Department of Visual Arts offers the baccalaureate degree in art studio. The 123-hour program exposes students to the various techniques, processes and experiences needed to develop personal direction in art or to gain the skills needed to become professional designers. Areas of concentration include drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, sculpture, ceramics and art education. Art students also have the option of pursuing a minor in any other academic department. Through Coastal's MAT graduate program, art studio majors can become certified to teach art in the public school system. Because the first year's courses in art are structured to help students develop basic skills as artists, it is important that beginning drawing and design courses are taken immediately. All students are required to participate in a second year review of their work and a senior exhibit during their last semester at Coastal. All work submitted for the senior exhibit will be juried by a committee of art faculty. Our Educational Objectives are: Art studio majors willl study one or more of the following: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, print making, and sculpture. Art studio majors will develop an understanding of the theoretical basis of art and an awareness of the standards which determine excellence in evaluating the visual arts . Art studio majors will develop an understanding of the continuity of art history and art philosophy and become familiar with a broad spectrum of examples of contributions to the world of art from diverse cultures. Art studio majors will develop their artistic ability and personal style in the visual arts . Career prospects for art majors include advertising designer, animator, art critic, art dealer, art director, art editor, art librarian, art therapist, calligrapher, cartoonist, commercial artist, creative director, display artist, exhibits specialist, fashion designer, fashion illustrator, film maker, gallery director, graphic designer/artist, illustrator, industrial designer, interior designer, landscape design artist, medical and scientific illustrator, painter, photo editor, photographer, printmaker, professor/instructor/teacher, publishing curator, sculptor, set designer, textile designer and visual information specialist.
