Athletic Training from College of Charleston is a Campus Bachelor Physical Therapy degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. The Athletic Training Education Program at the College of Charleston is a major degree program that prepares students for careers and advanced studies in medicine (physician, physician assistant, nurse) physical therapy, athletic training and other allied health professions. This degree program also qualifies graduates to sit for the National Athletic Trainers' certification examination to become a Board of Certification (BOC) certified athletic trainer, also known as a Certified Athletic Trainers or ATC. Certified athletic trainers are employed in secondary schools, two-year institutions, four-year colleges and universities, professional sports teams, as well as in non-traditional venues such as sports medicine clinics and various industrial and recreational settings. The Athletic Training Education Program is a competitive and selective academic program and as such students must make application to and be selected into this academically rigorous program. Any College of Charleston student may declare the Athletic Training major but only students selected into the program will be eligible to complete the major degree requirements. The academic course work includes such courses as anatomy, human and exercise physiology, kinesiology, orthopedic evaluation and assessment, pathology and treatment of illness, therapeutic modalities and therapeutic exercise, in addition to pharmacology, nutrition, counseling, and professional development. The clinical education component of the athletic training education program provides students the opportunity to participate in extensive clinical experiences in both the traditional collegiate, high school and semi-professional venues and the nontraditional setting of the sports medicine clinic, as well as other athletic health care settings.
