Today's commercial vehicle operators must be well trained to meet the increased demands of the modern, competitive transportation industry. This program trains individuals in the fundamentals of driving a Class A commercial vehicle, with emphasis on the practical knowledge required for tractor-trailer driving and the operating and related skills needed to be successful in the transportation industry. Through lectures, labs, and hands-on exercises, participants learn to safely manage the operation of a commercial vehicle in various driving situations. Both written and verbal communication skills are reinforced through vehicle inspection reporting, accident reporting, and completion of hazardous materials handling documentation. Trip planning and log book exercises that comply with Department of Transportation regulations for hours of service will emphasize mathematical skills. Students will be prepared to take the Motor Vehicle Administration Class A Commercial Vehicle License skills exam and can earn the following endorsements: general knowledge, air brakes,combinations, doubles/triples, tankers, and hazardous materials. The course includes the Defensive Driving for Professional Drivers, brake adjustment certification, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation's required entry-level driver training certificate .
