Program Overview The goal of this lower division course of study is to meet the needs of career oriented students who wish preparation at the Associate Degree levels and to serve as an introduction to the areas of social work, counseling, mentoring, gerontology, rehabilitation, and other helping professions for students planning to get advanced degrees. This program develops basic competencies in advocacy, intervention, referral, recordkeeping, interviewing skills, interpersonal communications, and assessment methods while developing an understanding of basic theories and current practices in the human services and helping skill professions. This program is designed for students who wish to acquire a Certificate of Completion in Human Services. The certificate includes a required course of classroom work and a supervisied field work practicum. For success in this program, the student must be mature, emotionally stable, and have strong writing and interpersonal skills. Non-abuse and non-dependency on chemicals, including alcohol, is required. Goals of the Program To prepare students for entry-level employment through specific vocational preparation To provide students with the job skills necessary for employment opportunities in human services agencies and community-based organizations.
