Program Format: Campus Program Level: Master

Filmmaking from Columbia University in the City of New York is a Campus Master Film degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. The MFA Program in Filmmaking offers a uniquely integrated curriculum centered around film as a storytelling medium, an emphasis reflected to varying degrees in every course offered. The course of instruction combines directing, writing, and producing with technical training and history/theory to provide students with a deep understanding of the principles and practice of dramatic filmmaking. In the first year, all students take a required, integrated program of workshops and lectures in producing, directing, screenwriting, and directing the actor, as well as a course in the short film form. Upon entering the second year, a student chooses a concentration ? screenwriting, directing, or producing ? but may take courses in other concentrations as electives. Every student must take two courses in history/theory/criticism prior to graduation. The thesis, for screenwriters, is a feature-length screenplay or an equivalent amount of writing for television. For directors, the thesis is a completed film directed by the student ? usually a short film, but feature films are allowed with special permission. For producers, the thesis is a completed film produced by the student ? usually but not always a director's thesis film . During the thesis years, all students, regardless of concentration, may direct a film, and any student who has written a feature-length screenplay may revise it in our workshop in Script Revision.
