International Affairs from Columbia University in the City of New York is a Campus Master International Relations degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. The MIA curriculum has been designed to develop international affairs professionals who understand the increasingly complex issues that transcend national boundaries and who have the managerial skills to apply their knowledge to real work situations. The curriculum has core requirements that are similar to the core of all SIPA degree programs and characteristics that are unique to the MIA. As is appropriate for a curriculum that prepares students for globally-oriented careers, the MIA core focuses more on international issues than other SIPA programs, and requires students to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language other than English. Building on SIPA's commitment to the practical application of knowledge, the MIA requires an internship, which is usually performed during the summer after the first year of course work provides hands-on experience. Similarly, increasing numbers of MIA students (and all MPA students) take advantage of workshop projects that present real-life assignments for teams of SIPA students working for diverse organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors.
