Computer Science from Community and Technical College at West Virginia University Institute of Technology is a Campus Associate Computer Science degree that prepares you for a IT career. The Computer Science Program at Tech is a well established and proven program with 32 years of service to the State of West Virginia. The Computer Science degree program began in 1972 as a program of study within the Department of Electrical Engineering. The first Computer Science graduating class completed degree requirements in 1975. In 1978, the program was moved to the Mathematics Department, and finally became a separate department within the College of Engineering in 1986. There are approximately 80 students currently enrolled as majors within Computer Science with an additional 50 students majoring in Computer Engineering (BSCpE) and other disciplines that enroll in the core computer science courses. In January 2004, the Associate of Science Degree in Computer Science (ASCS) was started at Tech to complement the four year BSCS program. The ASCS prepares students as entry-level programmers capable of writing traditional procedural language programs for dedicated use as well as object-oriented programs. Upon completion of the ASCS program, students will be able to develop web-enabled applications and work with computer networks and databases. The ASCS program targets students who desire the programming aspect of computer science and do not wish to pursue the upper-level math-based algorithms and scientific programming areas of study contained in the BSCS program. The ASCS program is a 64 credit hour program offered through the Community and Technical College at WVU-Tech by the College of Engineering Computer Science Department. The faculty members of the Computer Science Department provide a stable foundation for the program. Each has a vast amount of practical experience and has worked in and around industry which partially includes: CAMC, Columbia Gas Transmissions, NASA, AEP, National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Egan McAllister Associates, Spatial Integrated Systems, DARPA Funded Neural Networks Project, National Youth Science Camp, Logical Operators, Preiser Scientific, Eagle Research, Cannelton Industries, and Jacobs & Company. All of the core computer courses and computer labs are taught exclusively by Tech's faculty. To help supplement and broaden the students academic experience, various one hour elective courses in language specific areas are conducted by adjunct instructors from local industries.
