Program Format: Campus Program Level: Certificate

Substance Abuse Services from Community College of Vermont is a Campus Certificate Counseling degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. Why Our Program Works CCV's substance abuse services certificate prepares you for entry-level work and advancement within the profession. Our program has been approved by the Vermont Alcohol and Drug Abuse Certification Board as appropriate training for becoming a substance abuse counselor. The curriculum prepares you for progressive levels of examination, certification, and recertification within the field and addresses immediate workforce training needs and requirements. In addition, our faculty are working professionals who will prepare students for certification exams and connect them to hands-on learning opportunities. Becoming certified in the state of Vermont is a process involving both work experience and formal training. Both require specified numbers of hours which, in the latter case, result in the awarding of Continuing Education Units (CEUs). CCV's program provides necessary CEUs while also earning college credit towards a degree. Each approved 3-credit course provides 42 CEU's. Our certificate program can also be completed as part of CCV's human services associate degree program. Many core requirements are shared, and additional substance abuse courses can be taken as electives within the degree. What Can I Do with This Certificate? There are many positions currently available in this field, and the need is growing. You can become a Student Assistance Professional (SAP) and work in high schools as a prevention specialist. You may also work with state and private agencies, or as an assistant in private practice, in such areas as case management, intervention, and group facilitation. Eventually you may qualify as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) and with additional education, this may lead to private practice as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LACD).
