Photography Bachelor from Corcoran College of Art and Design details

Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Photography from Corcoran College of Art and Design is a Campus Bachelor Photography degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. Fine-art photography students have the benefit of a major museum as their campus, one that has been internationally acclaimed for its innovative exhibitions and extensive collection of photography. Students work with an experienced faculty that is deeply committed to the photographic medium as a powerful tool of personal expression. Core classes in photography concentrate on developing artistic and technical skills in tandem, with the goal of giving students the ability to express their ideas in whatever ways they see fit. Core classes are co-taught, meaning that students get feedback from two different teachers each week. This structured progression of core classes over three years is supplemented by required courses in specific practical areas such as color and studio lighting and by the student's choice of electives. The sophomore year builds on the foundation year by developing students' photography skills and their sense of personal direction. The junior year provides nearly full-time involvement in the medium, with an emphasis on risk-taking and analytical thinking. Students learn how photography functions as an art form, taking studio classes and courses covering the history of photography and recent critical and theoretical approaches. The primary focus of the senior year is the personal and professional development of the individual and the transition from college student to mature, self-directed artist who is ready to begin a professional career or to pursue graduate studies. A required year-long internship exposes students to the realities of the professional field and to a range of career options, including teaching, commercial photography , and curating. The capstone of each senior's experience is an exhibition of thesis work in the galleries of the internationally known Corcoran Gallery of Art.
