Curriculum Description The Accounting curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and the skills necessary for employment and growth in the accounting profession. Using the ?language of business,? accountants assemble and analyze, process, and communicate essential information about financial operations. In addition to course work in accounting principles, theories, and practice, students will study business law, finance, management, and economics. Related skills are developed through the study of communications, computer applications, financial analysis, critical thinking skills, and ethics. Graduates should qualify for entry-level accounting positions in many types of organizations including accounting firms, small businesses, manufacturing firms, banks, hospitals, school systems, and governmental agencies. With work experience and additional education, an individual may advance in the accounting profession. Accounting Program Outcomes Upon completion of all coursework in the Accounting program, the student will be able to: 1. Apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and practices as established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and other accounting related boards. 2. Analyze, classify, and record transactions for profit organizations. 3. Use payroll skills to produce payroll records, record payroll for the Employer and Employee and file various payroll reports such as W-2s, Form 940, Form 941 and related state forms. 4. Demonstrate competencies in Accounting by completing the course work. Then, if they choose, students may take the National Certified Bookkeeping Exam administrated by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB).
