In many of these areas, faculty are working toward a synthesis of political-economic perspectives with insights provided by literary and cultural studies as well as interdisciplinary research on space and place (The Center for Place, Culture, and Politics). The cultural subfield boasts a strong specialization in urban anthropology , medical anthropology, globalization, and a long term interest in human-environment relationships. Faculty maintain research interests in both rural and urban contexts, and in the interaction between the two. Faculty expertise covers all major geographic areas: Europe, North, Central, and South America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania, making the program particularly appropriate for students interested in critical and comparative analyses of transition to democratic capitalism.
