Examples include police offi cer, deputy sheriff, county detention offi cer, state trooper, intensive probation/parole surveillance offi cer, correctional offi cer, loss prevention specialist, wildlife offi cer, and alcohol enforcement offi cer. Competencies Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to: 1. Trace the history of law enforcement and corrections to analyze and solve contemporary problems in these professions. 2. Communicate effectively in oral and written formats. 3. Perform effectively with others in the investigation of criminal cases and the processing of these cases through the criminal justice system. 4. Use critical thinking to determine staffing allocations, manage criminal investigations, and apply constitutional principles. 5. Access, read, and analyze empirical data in the fi eld of criminal justice . 6. Demonstrate the technological skills necessary to function at an entry level position in law enforcement or corrections. 7. Demonstrate the time management skills, persistence, and integrity essential for appropriate interaction with the community, other offi cers, and criminal justice agencies. 8. Access law enforcement, correctional information, and data from computers, printed materials, and human resources. 9. Write investigative reports, internal memoranda, performance evaluations, and standard forms associated with the law enforcement and correctional professions. 10. Use critical thinking skills to analyze violations of criminal law for the purposes of selecting charges, developing search warrants, and avoiding civil liability.
