Biology Genetics Bachelor from Duke University details

Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Biology Genetics from Duke University is a Campus Bachelor Forestry degree that prepares you for a Science career. The study of heredity and gene action is one of the most rapidly developing fields of biology. A thorough understanding of genetics is essential to modern advances in agriculture, medicine, and many industrial fields dealing with biological diversity. The information content of genetic sequences is enormous and is rapidly becoming a major tool in tracing evolutionary lineages and in reassessing biological classification. There is a growing demand for geneticists in pure and applied research. Developments in biotechnology have shown the potential for using genetic techniques for synthesis of complex proteins, for improving crop plants and animals, and for generating novel strains of fungi and bacteria. In addition, gene therapy whereby defective genes are replaced by intact copies is becoming a medical reality. These developments have created a large demand for geneticists. More traditional fields such as genetic counseling, plant and animal breeding, and teaching at the college level continue to provide a wide range of employment opportunities. Many students are now choosing to combine their studies of genetics with related fields such as business or public policy, with a view to managerial positions in the biotechnology fields, or with a view to positions in government and law. The object of the Area of Concentration in Genetics is to provide Biology Majors with an in-depth exposure to modern aspects of genetics, including research experience in a genetics laboratory. Teaching of genetics at Duke is coordinated by the Duke University Program in Genetics . This graduate program consists of over 60 faculty from 9 departments (Biochemistry, Biology, Cell Biology, Medical Genetics, Molecular Cancer Biology, Microbiology, Immunology and Neurobiology). The large group of faculty in the Genetics Program are all actively engaged in research. They are, therefore, abreast of major new developments in the field, and indeed often responsible for these developments. The interests of the faculty are large and include population genetics, organelle genetics , chromosome biology, developmental genetics, molecular genetics , and many aspects of medical genetics. As a result an extremely wide range of independent study options are available so that students can gain first-hand research experience and interact directly with professional geneticists. Students fulfilling the requirements of the Area of Concentration in Genetics will receive a note on their official transcript certifying successful completion of the Area of Concentration.
