Nerve Conduction Studies - East - West University

Nerve Conduction Studies from East - West University is a Campus Certificate Neuroscience degree that prepares you for a Science career. The nerve conduction studies (NCS) certificate program consists of didactic and practical modules. The course begins with an overview of the historical perspective, philosophy, and applications of nerve conduction studies. Students will learn the anatomy and physiology of nerve and muscle with topics to include the motor and sensory systems, individual nerve anatomy, roots and dermatomes, motor unit, neuromuscular junction, muscle anatomy, and polarization of cells. Details relevant to performance of nerve conduction velocity testing and electromyography will be presented. Technique and performance of nerve conduction velocity testing including motor and sensory nerve testing, H-Reflex, F-Waves, Repetitive Stimulation, and Blink Reflexes. Testing protocol covers electrode placement and instrument parameters and students will work as partners in workshops to practice testing the upper extremity, specifically the brachial plexus and the median, ulnar, and radial nerves. Lower extremity practice will include the lumbosacral plexus and the peroneal, and posterior tibial nerves. Normal and abnormal tracings will be studied with clinical correlation and electromyography. Students are prepared for the registry exam in nerve conduction study, velocity testing (NCVS) given by the American Board for the Registration of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists and for the registry exam in electromyography (EMG).
