The Secondary Education program is designed to prepare entry-level professionals to teach in secondary classrooms. The program leads to certification in grades 7 through 12. Teacher candidates may select and be certified to teach in the following major areas: Biology, English, Earth Science, History and Social studies, other social science majors with selected coursework, and Mathematics. In order to ensure that candidates have acquired important content pedagogical, and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions as expected in their discipline(s), each teacher candidate enrolled in the secondary certification program will be required to pass a competency-based assessment task during their methods course prior to their student teaching semester. If a teacher candidate fails to meet these expectations he/she will receive appropriate remediation. The candidate will then have a second opportunity to pass the assessment before student teaching. Candidate unable to pass the assessment task on the second attempt will be required to register for an independent study.
