Goals and Objectives Students in the M.S. in Computer Science will meet all the goals and objectives for a B.S. in Computer Science degree . In addition, they should meet these goals and objectives: 1. Students will understand the design and analysis of algorithms. a. Students will become familiar with families of algorithms and their characteristics. b. Students will learn to select algorithms and/or heuristics appropriate to the problem being solved. c. Students will become familiar with a number of graph algorithms and their applications in a number of fields. d. Students will become familiar with strategies for dividing computational tasks to allow the use of multiple processing elements to find their solution. 2. Students will understand the principles of Software Engineering. a. Students will understand the history, scope, and trends of software engineering. b. Students will understand actual and recommended software engineering techniques involving software metrics, classical and object-oriented design, and CASE tools. c. Students will understand the role of technical communication in the software life cycle, the issues related to certification of software engineers, and desirable project management skills. 3. Students will understand the concepts of Operating Systems. a. Students will achieve in-depth familiarity with one or more advanced topics from the area of Operating Systems. b. Students will become familiar with programming in kernel mode. c. Students will understand the issues involved in modifying an Operating System. 4. Students will understand the concepts of Network Programming. a. Students will become familiar with new network technologies that will be dominantly used. b. Students will become familiar with concepts and standardized specifications of middleware compliant with the Internet. c. Students will be able to write and validate programs using RPC and sockets. d. Students will be able to develop and configure network applications such as DNS, E-mail, FTP and WWW. e. Students will be able to develop comprehensive network applications. 5. Students will understand the concepts of Artificial Intelligence. a. Students will understand the programming and the system architectures of modern intelligent systems. b. Students will understand the computational aspects of intelligent systems. c. Students will understand the foundation and the primary issues of knowledge based systems. 6. The following goals and objectives are based on the option that the student has selected. a. Computation Systems students will understand the concepts of Hardware Architecture. i. Students will learn current hardware architecture design techniques as applied to the CPU, memory hierarchies, I/O subsystems, and busses. ii. Students will apply the techniques learned in assignments and/or projects. b. Software Systems students will understand the concepts of Database Management Systems. i. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of query optimization. ii. Students will gain a working knowledge of query optimization within current database systems. iii. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of decision support systems, data warehouses, and data mining. iv. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of selected advanced features of current database packages, including facilities for, but not limited to, decision support systems, data warehouses, and data mining. v. Students will obtain knowledge of sources of information about selected advanced topics, including history, current state-of-affairs, and both marketing and research trends. 7. Students will have in-depth expertise in at least one specialty area. a. Students will take a 2 course sequence which explores a focus area in depth. b. Throughout the sequence, students will work assignments which progressively require a greater depth of knowledge in that specialty. 8. Students will have a practical familiarity in a broad range of computer science topics, integrating several different areas. a. Students will integrate theoretical concepts into applied problems. b. Students will integrate software engineering concepts into solving large problems. 9. Students will have the ability to conduct independent/original research and communicate the results clearly and concisely in written work. a. Each student will independently complete research for a substantive thesis or project. b. Each student will write a paper demonstrating that research.
