The department offers a broad range of courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree . Courses focus on human communication behaviors. Coursework is designed to improve oral message sending and relational communication skills, to foster creative dramatic talents, to develop journalistic skills, to promote expertise in public relations, and to prepare teachers of communication and theatre. The department's goal is to prepare students for the communicative challenges of the 21st century. Courses create an awareness of the critical role of communication in the issues that face and will face members of society. In consultation with their advisor, students develop their programs by taking courses in general communication , journalism, theatre, and related areas of communication. Majors complete a "Communication Core" consisting of 12 hours, an applied disciplinary focus of 6 hours, plus an additional 24 hours in the area of emphasis. Students in the secondary education speech communication program must meet the specific departmental and certification requirements outlined for that program. A minimum of 42 hours is required for a major. At least one-third of the coursework must include upper-division courses.
