The study of history at the university level is one of the foundations of a liberal arts and sciences education . Historical study has humanizing and broadening effects on the individual. It is also a practical choice for the student interested in a broad range of career opportunities. The Department of History emphasizes a world view of human development in its curriculum for majors. The department also produces students who have the practical skills of critical thinking and analysis, curiosity, tolerance and objectivity, investigative technique, writing ability, and computer skills in international databases. These methods of critical inquiry have served history majors at FHSU well in careers as varied as historical research, law, medicine, business, theology, government service, military service, historic preservation, historical society leadership, journalism, secondary education, and other professions. The department encourages students to participate in arranged apprenticeships in preparation for history-related careers other than secondary education . There are scholarships in history available on a competitive basis for sophomores, juniors, and seniors majoring in history at FHSU, including transfer students. These scholarships have ranged from $200 per year to $1,000 per year. Freshmen may compete for $400 scholarships in history through the Award of Excellence Program and for Department of History Scholarships. Graduate students are eligible for assistantships and scholarships. All history students with the necessary scholastic achievement are eligible for membership in Phi Alpha Theta (International History Honor Society).
