Program Overview Through extensive study of literature, language , and writing, English majors develop the essential skills of critical thinking, cogent analysis, and effective communication. The Department offers bachelor's degrees in four areas: literature, creative writing, professional writing, and teaching certification. Minors are also offered in English and in Writing. English Major The English major comprises 40 hours of course work. To fulfill the requirements, you (1) take the departmental core of courses and (2) complete one of the concentrations in literature, creative writing, professional writing, or teaching certification. Literature (24 hrs.) The literature concentration prepares students to read, write, and think critically. These are skills that are essential to your survival and success in the Information Age regardless of what your future holds, whether it is attending graduate school or pursuing a career in law, publishing, editing, media writing, among others. Creative Writing (24 hrs.) The creative writing concentration prepares students for careers as fiction writers, poets, and essayists, including enrollment in graduate writing programs. With this background, you might also pursue careers as literary agents, editors, publishers, copywriters, writers-in-schools, book reviewers, and manuscript consultants. Professional Writing (24 hrs.) Students in the professional writing concentration will have a rare opportunity--that is, to experience a curriculum that focuses on the kinds of pragmatic writing and editing that are regularly required in the world of work. This concentration will prepare you for a host of professions, including technical writing and editing, media writing and reporting, public relations, publishing, copy editing, and organization communications.
