Art from Furman University is a Campus Bachelor Study of Art degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. Art majors at Furman concentrate on either studio art or art history, and they may take additional courses in education to earn teacher certification. Complete information on major requirements is found in the Handbook for the Department of Art , which is revised annually and available upon request. Majors who concentrate on studio art choose from courses in graphic design, drawing, painting,sculpture, ceramics, digital imaging, photography and printmaking, as well as art history. They display their work in student exhibitions and in a special exhibition for graduating seniors. Students who concentrate in art history take at least seven art history courses, at least two studio courses and may arrange an internship. Students who want to be certified to teach follow a special program in studio art and art history, take courses in education and psychology, and complete the teaching internship. The thoroughness of Furman's art program is evident in the content of the courses offered. Art history courses cover everything from prehistoric to modern times and provide a penetrating look, through lectures and audio-visual presentations, at the development of the arts and their effect upon the cultures of various civilizations, from Western Europe to Africa, the Americas and the Far East. Studio courses also offer a wide range of opportunities. Painting classes work with watercolors, oils and acrylics, and sculpture classes work with clay, metal, wood and stone. Printmaking students learn the four printing methods: intaglio, lithography, silkscreen and woodcut.Design students study form, structure, color and shape before advancing to classes using a variety of computer programs and techniques.
