Riley Hall of Computer Science and Mathematics provides an outstanding environment for the study of computer science through its specially designed laboratories, student research areas and electronic classrooms. The department maintains three separate lab facilities; thus, a variety of modern computing equipment is readily available to its students. Furman offers majors in computer science and information technology, as well as an interdisciplinary major in computer science-mathematics. All of the computing majors emphasize fundamental principles of the discipline, provide extensive knowledge of the design and implementation of hardware and software systems, and prepare students to solve complex problems using computation. And whether students choose a major in computer science, information technology, or computer science-mathematics, they are well prepared for scientific, technical and managerial positions in business and industry, or to pursue graduate study. At Furman, all majors complete a common core of computer science courses that emphasize problem solving, hierarchical thinking and design skills before taking additional courses tailored to their particular area of study. Computer science majors delve deeply into the field, exploring advanced topics in programming, computer organization, and theory. Majors in computer science have a wide range of post-graduation options, including further studies in graduate school and work in the corporate world as designers, managers, programmers, researchers, etc. Information technology majors take several courses in applied areas of the field, including web application design, networking, database systems and ethics, preparing them to excel in a wide variety of professions that rely upon an understanding of information technology.
