Any interested student may enroll in the basic course, which runs throughout freshman and sophomore year, without obligation. In the Basic Course, you have multiple opportunities for Engaged Learning as you put your skills and education into practice in realistic and challenging leadership scenarios. If you choose to continue with and complete the Advanced Course, you will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Reserves, National Guard or Active Duty upon graduation. Furman's ROTC chapter, the Paladin Battalion, is currently ranked among the top 20 percent of all programs in the nation. Thanks to a dedicated, experienced Cadre and intelligent, motivated Cadets, the Paladin Battalion consistently garners national attention. The Military Science Department commissions all graduating seniors who have successfully completed the basic (or equivalent) and advanced courses as officers in the United States Army Reserves, National Guard or Active Duty during annual commencement exercises. As with Furman's pre-professional programs, the ROTC program supports Furman's commitment to the liberal arts education by allowing students to explore their academic interests while preparing for a career. Students can choose to major in any field they desire, while at the same time training to serve their country as a military officer. In order to receive an Army officer's commission through Furman, participants complete both the basic (or equivalent) and advanced sequence of Military Science courses. Any student may take the basic course sequence without incurring a military obligation, which gives students a chance to experience the department and decide if military leadership fits them. After completion of the basic course sequence at the end of the sophomore year, interested students may go on to participate in the upper level courses as a contracted ROTC cadet. Military Science students will take courses in areas such as American Military History, National Security, and small unit leadership. Courses are taught in the Bryan Center for Military Science, located adjacent to the Herman W. Lay Physical Activities Center. View more details on Furman University .
