Another popular program is the Spring Term in Washington, where students spend a term in the nation's capital studying and learning about the inner workings of government through internships with different agencies or organizations, such as the Department of Justice or the American Bar Association. In just a few short years of existence, the university's Mock Trial team has established a reputation as one of the nation's best. The team has finished in the top eight in the last two national tournaments, which feature 64 teams from throughout the country. The Mock Trial program gives undergraduate students a chance to practice courtroom etiquette, strategy and procedures. Some prelaw students work as interns with law firms during the school year or the summer. In these positions, they have the opportunity to observe actual court cases and to learn about the judicial process on both the state and federal level. Through Furman's community service organization, students can volunteer to work in such areas of legal service as emergency shelters, homes for troubled children and family counseling.
