The mission of the Department of Mass Communication is to provide an intellectual climate that prepares students to be responsible citizens with a broad understanding of the role and responsibility of a media professional in society. It includes providing an opportunity for the student to carve out a professional career in the broad field of mass communication. The mission also incorporates providing knowledge, research, and practical experiences that promote among students an appreciation and understanding of a multicultural society. In pursuance of the mission, the Department of Mass Communication has the following objectives: 1. provide a broad understanding of the role of communication and mass media in society; 2. prepare students for careers in the areas of mass communication - print journalism, broadcasting, public relations, and visual communication; 3. offer services to the community through workshops, seminars, and media facilities; 4. provide an intellectual climate for students to think critically of issues related to mass media at the regional, national, and global levels; and 5. provide an understanding of the importance of personal and mediated intercultural interaction as an avenue to succeed in a multicultural society.
