Health Assisting from Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center is a Campus Certificate Health Aide degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. Health Occupations is a three-year program of study and activities that prepare students for various positions in the health care field. It provides diversified career training with a future. In addition, it offers the required training and instruction so that the student will be eligible to take the Nurse Aide Competency Test. The program offers hands-on instruction of basic nurse aide and medical assisting skills. Students receive instruction in procedures involved in examination, care of and treatment of patients. This includes, but is not limited to bathing patients, providing mouth care, feeding the dependent patient, transferring and positioning patients, bed making, hand washing and gloving, and measurement of a patient's height, weight and vital signs. The program also offers basic emergency care and certification in CPR and use of the AED. Students are given instruction in anatomy and physiology, disease processes and nutrition. The basics of infection control, safety and law and ethics are also presented to students. The students also learn medical abbreviations and medical terminology. The Health Occupations program gives instruction and helps students establish good work ethic traits. Students must be willing to practice the health care career in an ethical manner. They must abide by all the rules established for both the classroom and clinical sites, including following the required dress code and behaving in a professional manner. Students must be hard working and dedicated. They must have the capacity to work independently as well as function as a team member. Health care is in need of caregivers who are patient, understanding and caring. This is an excellent stepping stone for health care professionals of the future. Health Occupations results in the student being able to become a health care worker as a certified nurse assistant. In addition, instruction is given in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, basic procedures involved in examination, care of and treatment of patients.
