COURSE DESCRIPTION: Licensed Vocational Nurses (also known as Licensed Practical Nurses in some states) care for the sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled under the direction of physicians and registered nurses . Most LVNs provide basic bedside care. They check vital signs, treat wounds and bedsores, prepare and administer medication including injections and enemas, apply hot and cold treatments, and perform sterile procedures such as dressing changes and urinary catheterization. They observe patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments. They collect specimens for testing, perform routine laboratory tests, feed patients, and record food and fluid intake and output. They assist patients with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene, keep them comfortable, and care for their emotional needs. Some LVNs help deliver, care for, and feed infants. LVNs may supervise Nursing Assistants especially in skilled nursing facilities. GOALS: The Vocational Nursing program theory and clinical content covers Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, pharmacology and medication administration, normal growth and development, basic psychology concepts, legal and ethical issues and performance of basic nursing skills. Care of obstetric and pediatric patients and patients with specific body system dysfunction are also included.
