The first two weeks or 80 clocked hours are devoted to the basic practical aspects of the industry including manicures and pedicures. You will learn to identify and use equipment, implements, materials, and cosmetics needed for manicures and pedicures. Describe the basic table set-up and the four basic nail shapes. Students learn the steps for pre-service, procedures for water manicure, hot oil manicure, male manicure, and pedicures as well as hand and arm massage. There is a very basic introduction to the electric file. The next 140 clocked hours will include nail tips, nail wraps, acrylic nails, and gels. The student will learn to identify the supplies needed for the application of these services and explain their uses. Students will demonstrate proper procedures and precautions for the application and safe removal of nail tips, fabric wraps, acrylic over forms, acrylic over tips, acrylic over bitten nails, odorless acrylics, light/no light cured gels, and the precautions necessary for applying primer. This section also covers maintenance procedures for the services covered. In creative touch, different methods and supplies for nail artistry are demonstrated including air brushing techniques and equipment. The electric file will be taught more thoroughly at this time. As part of the completion of these 140 clocked hours, students are introduced to the clinic floor to perform freshman services to the public for a fee. The junior level of the course, or the next 140 clocked hours, are devoted to understanding the importance of professional image, the study of bacteriology, sanitation, disinfection, and safety in the salon. Students will learn salon conduct, professional ethics, and appearance. The comprehensive study of bacteriology, salon contaminants, sterilization, sanitation and disinfection, and their practical applications; what overexposure is and how to detect it; Material Safety Data sheets, ventilation and the recognition of cumulative trauma disorders will be covered. Student continues performing clinic services at a more advanced level. The senior level begins at 340 clocked hours, and for the next 140 hours students will study nail product chemistry and how it functions, anatomy and physiology, the nail , nail disorders (causes and treatment), skin, skin disorders (causes and treatment), when treatment is possible and when it is not. Anatomy and physiology chapters include metabolism, body tissue, organs, systems, muscle stimulation, and functions of the blood. Client consultation will go in-depth on when client referral to a physician is advisable, health card information, and the importance of healthy nails . Services performed on the clinic floor will now be at a senior level. The final 100 hours of training will cover salon business and selling nail products and services. These chapters are very important and will enable the student to recognize the advantages/disadvantages of full-service salons/nail only salons, and the importance of good record keeping. Student will now begin preparing for final exams and honing procedure skills for the mock state board exam. Successful completion of 600 hours, all course and practical work with all fees paid, student awarded a certificate of Graduation and is eligible to take the School Board Exam. This Board evaluates practical work, theory comprehension, and professionalism. Students must achieve a minimum of 75% on both written and practical exams.
