The program for majors prepares students for advanced study in chemistry and provides a foundation for students interested in careers in the health professions. Students are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research with Hampton University faculty as well as to pursue work experiences in other academic laboratories, national research laboratories, and industrial research and development laboratories. The department encourages chemistry students to participate in professional organizations such as the American Chemical Society student affiliate, Beta Kappa Chi national scientific honor society, and the National Technical Association. Students in chemistry are expected to achieve scores placing them at the 50th percentile ranking or above in the Chemistry Test of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Major Field Achievement Test (MFAT).
