What Hanover Theological Studies Offers The study of theology seeks to find answers to questions about God, self and purpose. While questions such as these are not easily answered, the academic study of theology provides an environment for intelligent and thoughtful discussion that will enhance the lives of students, regardless of their future career plans. Theological studies at Hanover College explores and analyzes vital religious traditions, their impact on society throughout history, and how those traditions of the past remain truthful and relevant today. Religious perspectives are treated as one way to make sense of the world, and Hanover students are given the resources to take part in the continuing critique and development of those perspectives. While neither asking nor expecting students to accept one religious tradition over another, or to affirm theological perspectives as the best way to view the world, our classes and personal expertise fall primarily within the Christian tradition. We regard faith as a living reality, and we invite students to work with us in cooperative attempt to make theological sense of the world in which we live. All Hanover students take an introductory course that introduces them to formal theological reflection, which may then be pursued in four major areas: biblical studies , contemporary theology , ethics, and historical theology. Each course involves substantial small-group discussion to encourage students to probe their own response to the course materials. Many Hanover students take one or more of the department's advanced courses, and some students choose to minor or major in theological studies. Some students go on to pursue graduate training in religion, theology , or ministry, while others are simply interested in discovering more about themselves and the world from within a theological framework.
