Social Work from Hardin - Simmons University is a Campus Bachelor Sociology degree that prepares you for a Human Services career. Social work is a dynamic profession which has at its core the fundamental commitment to help people and communities solve problems. In recognition of this commitment, the Social Work Program has the following goals: 1. Graduates will have a generalist's knowledge of social work that is both broad in its scope as relates to theory and practice, and, also, specific to the understanding of practice settings, agencies, and clients. 2. Developing Skills Graduates will have developed relationship skills, cognitive skills, political skills, and professional skills appropriate to generalist social work practice. 3. Values and Ethics Immersion Graduates will be immersed in the values and ethics of the social work profession to prepare them for value based practice. 4. Diversity and Justice Graduates will not only understand but will embrace diversity in the world and will be committed to promoting social justice. 5. Leadership Graduates will be leaders in developing a nurturing and supportive environment for all people by being competent organizational leaders, developers of policies that promote social justice, and advocates for those people who are marginalized. The curriculum is organized around five essential components which include Human Behavior and Social Environment, Social Welfare Policy and Services, Social Work Practice, Social Work Research, and Field Instruction. It is important that the student make an early decision to enter the program, as courses are in sequential order and begin in the freshman year. The Program grants no academic credit for Life or Work experience. In the admission process, students may apply after successful completion of SCWK 2360.
