Mental Health Counseling The master of science degree in mental health counseling consists of 60 semester hours of training in basic principles and practices to understand the development, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental and emotional disorders. Effective utilization of DSM-IV-TR and appropriate treatment plans are fundamental in the training. Nine semester hours of clinical practica comprise the direct client contact component and networking experience with professionals in practice. Preparation in counseling theory, self of the threapist, supervision and professional identity round out the core curriculum. Individuals completing the course of study are encouraged to sit for the National Counseling Exam (NCE) and fulfill requirements for licensure in respective states of intended practice.
