Mission statement The Sociology Department at Hastings College seeks to develop in students an understanding of the sociological perspective and a useful set of skills for employing the methods of the discipline. Assessment of departmental goals. The sociology major develops competence in two fundamental areas: theory, and statistics and research methods. Student competence in the area of statistics and research methods is assessed (independent of grades) at the sophomore level during the statistics and research methods courses. Student competence in these areas is assessed (independent of grades) at the junior/senior level during during the capstone course for their major (Senior Topics or HSA Seminar). Th ese assessment activities provide the department with a basis for making improvements to the curriculum, teaching techniques, course structures and resource allocation. The Human Services Administration Major serves students interested in careers in public service organizatoins such as government agencies and jurisdictions, service institutions (hospitals and schools), and nonprofit organizations which develop and deliver services in aging, community development, income security, mental health and retardation, and other social services. The HSA major is firmly based on fundamental social science skills. It develops competencies in public policy, managerial and organizational processes, diversity issues, direct nonprofit organizational experience, and fundraising and accounting. The HSA major crosses departmental lines. It combines appropriate information and skills from Communication Arts, Business and Economics, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology to provide foundation for employment upon completion of the bachelor's degree , or for advanced study in graduate school.
