Many of our students combine mathematics with courses in education that prepare them to teach mathematics at either the elementary or secondary level. Others use their mathematics to enter into a professional program at the graduate level to study law, medicine, engineering, computer science, or theology. Some pursue an advanced degree in mathematics and teach at the college level. Math classes at Houghton usually enroll between 10 and 20 students. We place much emphasis on the use of modern technology along with teamwork in small group situations. We anticipate that all our students would do well in graduate programs. Each year the department employs about fifteen math majors as teaching assistants to help with the discussion groups in the calculus and pre-calculus classes.
