Athletic Training of Education (ATEP) majors develop an understanding of individuals and how to foster their growth physically, mentally and socially. Blending an emphasis of theory and practice, students will be introduced to the athletic training domains and the area of required clinical proficiencies. The intent of the athletic training education program is to prepare athletic trainers to function in cooperation with medical personnel, athletic administrators, coaches, and parents in the development and coordination of efficient and responsive athletic health care delivery systems. The ATEP major allows for diversity and professional development in the area of athletic training through hands-on training at area schools, universities, professional sports, and clinic settings. What will I experience at HBU? Learn from professors who have worked in a variety of setting as an Athletic Trainer Study in small classes where you will receive personal attention and personal direction from your professors Gain hands-on training through the clinical practicum's and senior seminar Develop an understanding of all the domains in athletic training . What foundation courses do I take? 9 hours of Christianity, 6 hours of English and written English Proficiency Exam, 3 hours of speech communications, 3 hours of math level 1305 or higher, 8 hours of science with laboratory, 3 hours of management information systems, 9 hours of social and behavioral science electives, 15 hours of humanities and fine arts electives, Creating a Wellness Lifestyle (KINE 2202), program requirements and electives, including Freshman Year Experience if required. BIOL 2404 Human Anatomy and Physiology I is required as part of Smith College requirements for all kinesiology majors. Physically challenged students enrolled in Kinesiology courses are required to attend all class sessions and are given alternative assignments for lab activities that they are unable to complete. A total of 58 hours in the major must be taken including the following courses: Foundations of Athletic Training, Basic Health Assessment & Terminology, Prevention & Treatment of Sport Injuries, Standard First Aid/CPR, Sport Psychology, Recognition/Evaluation of Sport Injuries & Lab Lower and Upper Extremities, Therapeutic Modalities & Lab, Nutrition for Health, Therapeutic Exercise Rehabilitation, Administration & Management of Athletic Training Programs, Pathology and Pharmacology of Injuries, Physiology of Exercise (Prerequisite Anatomy & Physiology I), Kinesiology (Prerequisite A & PI, and Physiology of Exercise), research senior seminar and field experience senior seminar, and Clinical Practicum's I-VI.
