Liberal Studies Elementary Education from Humboldt State University is a Campus Bachelor Elementary Education degree that prepares you for a Education career. The Liberal Studies/Elementary Education (LSEE) major at Humboldt is a course of study whose main purpose is to prepare students to work toward a California Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential. The courses in the LSEE major also satisfy all the general education requirements for Humboldt. A LSEE major has all the career opportunities of any Liberal Studies major, but in addition, is provided with the background knowledge needed to be an excellent elementary school teacher as well as pass the CSET exam required to get into Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential Programs. The LSEE program is a four-year undergraduate program that provides students with knowledge of the subject matter they are required to teach in elementary schools. After students complete 4/5 or more of this program they can apply to the Multiple Subjects Credential Program. It is necessary for students to take a full academic load to complete the LSEE programs in a timely fashion. Since program requirements may change, students are required to follow the program approved for the academic year in which they entered the program. Students should work closely with the program advisor. The philosophy of the LSEE program is to provide a course array that offers opportunities for a well-educated person to confront intellectual issues that transcend the disciplines. This includes highly-developed verbal and written communication skills. Additionally, students will know and understand each subject of the elementary school curriculum with considerable breadth and depth. Freshman students can pursue an integrated option that combines subject matter preparation and teaching methods into one program. This option has extensive fieldwork requirements and leads to a BA degree and multiple subjects credential in a four-year program that includes one summer session. The academic advisor and peer advisors provide individualized assistance in planning academic schedules and in preparing credential program applications. Students are encouraged to participate in the Student Chapter of California Teachers Association and the Future Educators Club. The Multiple Subjects, Single Subjects, and Special Education credentials are basic credentials. Although they are all K-12, the Multiple Subjects is generally used in a self-contained classroom, the Single Subjects is generally used for subject-specific classroom teaching, and the Special Education Credential is used in special day class and/or resource specialist classroom. A teacher who holds a basic credential may additionally pursue a service or specialist credential such as Administrative Services, Adapted Physical Education , or Pupil Personnel (School Psychology).
