Description: The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in management information systems (MIS). The MIS Program emphasizes the study and understanding of sound business practices using today's technology, and prepares students for careers in which they develop and maintain information systems as solutions to business problems. Course work in the major includes a required core of business courses?plus courses in the following areas: Business telecommunications Database management Information resource management courses Programming Systems analysis and design In addition, students complete a minimum of three electives?selected from management information systems, accounting, or computer science?that provide professional preparation with a focus on a specific career path. The MIS Program focuses strongly on system analysis and system development. Programming is a requirement, but the course work concentrates more on the managerial aspects of creating and implementing business applications. Most courses stress hands-on learning of technologies, and offer real-world experience, with project assignments that represent those found in business and industry. Working independently and with project teams, students gain expertise in system analysis and design, database management, telecommunications and networking, artificial intelligence, information resource management , computing, and organizational learning. At least one core management information systems course requires the completion of a real-world project that results in a working application. In this course, students perform a systems analysis, design a working system, and implement the system within one semester. Some courses involve major papers, which have resulted in publishable manuscripts. Management information systems students have delivered regional and national conference presentations based on research developed for classes. Several core courses require real-world team projects. Numerous departments on campus, as well as for-profit and nonprofit organizations in the region, currently use applications developed by our students. Careers: Our graduates are hired as business analysts, systems analysts, programmer/analysts, data security specialists, and Web developers. Others serve as network or database administrators and information technology managers. Employers range from Fortune 500 firms to small family-owned businesses.
