Art Education Programs are housed in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction (C & I) in the School of Education at Indiana University. Our program content focuses on subject-matter-centered (comprehensive art education), child-centered (artistic development), society-centered (community-based), and international-centered orientations. Our program also includes a strong emphasis on new media, technologies and popular culture that relate to art education theory and practice, and on art talent development. Our graduate programs are individualized and students take elective courses with emphases based on their interests and past experiences. Teacher education is highlighted in all programs in C&I. Multi-media and new technologies are emphasized in the School of Education . All master's and doctoral students are encouraged to be computer literate, to take courses in computer graphics and to participate in interactive communication within and outside their local environment. Multi-cultural, cross-cultural, popular culture and media studies, gender and diversity issues and global education are emphasized in our program and in the C & I Department. Program assessment is emphasized in courses that doctoral students are required to take in their program of studies. There also is emphasis on traditional, community-based art education , and museum education. Doctoral students have opportunities to join faculty members in conducting research in a number of the areas mentioned. Our Mission: The faculty of the Art Education program at Indiana University value equally the importance of creating and responding to artful images. We recognize that while most graduates of K-12 programs, and most museum visitors, will not go on to become artists, professional critics, or scholars in the arts, everyone spends a lifetime responding to, appreciating, and judging visual compositions. Students in schools and museums should be taught by teachers who can help them become active participants in the arts community, making well-grounded and enriching responses, both creative and critical, to their visual environments. Indiana University???s graduate programs in Art Education prepare teachers and researchers who can foster these goals. The program also acknowledges the value, teaching potential, and importance of visual images from a wide range of sources: the visual environments explored by our students are many. The sources include ???fine art??? as defined by museum collections reflecting the world???s cultures and a range of media, popular imagery in publications aimed at both children and adults, everyday objects used at home, commercial design for purposes of visual communication, visual compositions available even accidentally in the course of an ordinary day, and others. Therefore, the graduate Art Education program at Indiana University seeks to enrich the classroom teaching of experienced K-12 art teachers, museum educators, and new professionals coming to art education from related careers. The Master???s degree program welcomes practicing art teachers and graduates in other disciplines to enrich their knowledge of art and art teaching, so as to apply the best and most current knowledge about the learning of art in their teaching. The doctoral program invites students with interests in research and in-depth exploration of the field to develop strengths in designing, conducting, analyzing and interpreting research in art education .
