This program is designed to prepare students for professional roles in university teaching and research, as well as in development and consulting for governmental and non-governmental agencies. The major emphasizes the history of U.S. education broadly defined, including formal institutions, nonformal institutions and processes, related policy problems, and persistent educational themes in U.S. history, e.g., those bearing on race, gender, social class, and international relations. Students are encouraged to complete supplementary coursework in programs and departments outside the School of Education, for example, in African American and African Diaspora Studies, American Indian Studies, American Studies, East Asian Studies, History, Latino Studies, Philanthropy Studies, and Women???s History and Gender Studies. The faculty in History of Education recommends for admission to the PhD program only those students whose academic record, personal references, and GRE scores indicate high promise of success in teaching and research. To gain unconditional admission, students must have completed preparatory studies at the undergraduate or graduate level consisting of 12 hours in history or history of education. An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and a combined GRE score of at least 1600, or of at least a total of 1200 plus 4.5 in analytic writing, are normally required. However, other evidence of high quality may be sufficient for at least conditional admission. Interested students are strongly advised to contact the program director or another member of the program faculty before applying for admission. Students must complete an approved program of 90 graduate hours, including coursework in the History of Education, Inquiry Methods, an approved minor, 6 to 18 credits in a second minor or electives, and a dissertation. Minors and electives must include courses that strengthen the academic and scholarly preparation of the student. Some of these requirements may have been met through a recently awarded master???s degree . Students must pass written and oral examinations to be admitted to candidacy and must successfully defend the dissertation in a final oral examination.
