Mathematics from Indiana University - Bloomington is a Campus Master Teaching degree that prepares you for a Education career. Requirements for the Master of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) Degree The M.A.T. degree requires a total of at least 36 hours, including at least 20 hours of graduate credit in Mathematics at the 400-level or higher (excluding S499-Reading for Honors). With the permission of the Director of Graduate Studies, up to 6 hours of courses below the 400-level may count toward the remaining 16 required hours. The courses you submit toward the degree must include at least one 3-hour course in each of the following groups: 1. Algebra 2. Analysis 3. Probability and Statistics 4. Topology and Geometry 5. Applied Mathematics & Numerical Analysis. The Graduate School stipulates that all degree requirements must be completed within a 5-year period. The Math Department intends students to complete their requirements within two to three years under normal circumstances. Each candidate (other than foreign students) for the M.A.T. degree must possess a teacher certificate from Indiana or some other state before the degree is conferred. The Math Department has no part in this requirement; Degree candidates should consult the School of Education for evaluation and assistance in meeting this requirement. Foreign students seeking the M.A.T. degree are not required to obtain a teacher certificate. They must instead be certified by the Department of Mathematics . A foreign M.A.T. candidate must have the following: 1. A geometry course such as T336 or M436, 2. Computer experience such as M371 (beyond A201), 3.
